Tampa Bay residents certainly have a taste for Mexican food, but there is a true shortage of authentic establishments. Many of the best places are dives that are not particularly inviting for a date or comfortable. Tequila Mexican Restaurant is the opposite of that. Tequila reminds me in many ways of the Mexican places you will find in Northern California, although it has its own unique style and flavors. A family-owned restaurant, I believe I once had a daughter of the owner as my waitress. Her attention service was excellent and several other visits have ended in positive service experiences.
Location-wise, Tequila could be a little more central to Tampa diners. Located deep inside Temple Terrace, USF students would need to make a small trek to make it there, it is unlikely that people who live in West Tampa would make a trip this far east. Still, Tequila has plenty of great food to offer and is worth a look if you are looking for some excellent Mexican food at an affordable price. The menu book has tons of options, indeed it may be bigger or rival the menu of The Cheesecake Factory in quantity of items, which can make deciding on something difficult. I have yet to find an item that I don’t like on the menu.
The chips and salsa are excellent and amazingly provided for free. We could not hold back from devouring the salsa so the picture above is actually not what it looks like as it hits your table. The waitresses also quickly bring it out when you arrive and are happy to provide refills.
If you love horchata like I do, you are in luck because Tequila Mexican Restaurant has the largest horchata glass that I have ever seen. In fact, this glass is probably normally used for margaritas or margaronas, but at Tequila even non-alcoholic consumers can have it their way. The horchata is amazing and something that should not be missed if you love the drink.
The chorizo and steak burrito is one of my favorite items on the menu and it is difficult not to order it! The chorizo quality at Tequila is impressive and I think will enlighten some people just how much other restaurants in Tampa skip on quality. Being from California, I am someone who prefers my burrito wrapped up and served inside aluminum foil, however Tequila is the first restaurant in Tampa to bring me to truly appreciate burritos the other way around. The queso and other fresh ingredients found inside are what make the case.
There are a few dessert options at Tequila…my friends are fans of the Mexican fried ice cream. I am more accustomed to Japanese fried tempura ice cream, but the Mexican fried ice cream is still delicious and a great end to a meal.
I highly recommend Tequila Mexican Restaurant if you are looking for an authentic Mexican sit-down restaurant in Tampa Bay. It may not be conveniently located, but it is worth a trip. The restaurant has not been too busy during my visits and certainly deserves a bigger crowd. Students or those on a budget should check out their 99-cent taco specials on Mondays and Tuesdays.
