I stopped by La Cubanita last weekend for some breakfast with my family after repeatedly hearing positive critiques from my aunt about the food there. The restaurant is located across from the popular and fairly new Mexican restaurant called Poblano’s. The interior is quite plain and more like a cafeteria than a cafe. Many of the items for sale can be seen through glass windows and everything looked tasty, even the yuca or cassava, which I tend to despise.
I was happy to see some Malta India, a Puerto Rican beverage, in their fridge with refreshments and when I put it on the counter the front cashier, who didn’t seem to be in a very good mood asked us where we were from. When we replied she was awkwardly mum despite hearing that it was our first visit to the restaurant, which left us feeling unwelcomed. Any further questions we had were addressed with some odd reluctance.
The food, however, was excellent. I had a BLT ($4.99) with a side of Cuban toast ($1.49) which was perfectly toasty. Warning to dieters: Cuban bread is your enemy because it is completely amazing and addicting. The bacon was flavorful and there was just the right consistency between the ingredients, all clearly fresh. The omelette sandwich my companion ordered also looked great.
The dinner items look particularly good and I wouldn’t mind trying those in the future, though I would hope the next service experience would be a little more welcoming with La Septima, Latin Grill, and plenty of competitors for Spanish cuisine in business around this area.
