State Road 60, also known as Adamo Drive, is an essential part of every Brandon-area resident and I frequently find myself stopping at the M.D. Oriental Market on this road for some Asian snacks and drinks. Saigon Cafe arrived shortly after this M.D. Oriental Market came to Brandon (also neighbors with Tokai Sushi) and serves Vietnamese cuisine, something that has not quite caught on in Brandon the way it has in Tampa and St. Petersburg, but seems to be trending increasingly in the area. I am not a huge fan of pho, but I absolutely love Vietnamese sub sandwiches, called Bánh mì, so I decided to stop into Saigon Cafe and grab one.
The restaurant was deserted and like most family-owned restaurants the employees were in the back having some food while they waited for customers. When I came to the register the woman at the front seemed a little confused about why I had appeared there (maybe she thought I was lost). However, I made it quickly made it clear that I was after a Bánh mì sandwich. They had a few types for less than $4 which is not a bad price. I ordered the combination sandwich and they had the sandwich prepared in just a few minutes.
I did not feel very comfortable there so I took my sandwich to-go and brought it home. The sandwich was great. I loved the spreadable pork liver pâté spread on the bottom layer of the sandwich and all ingredients tasted fresh. The french bread was clearly store bought, but tasted recently bought. The pig skin could have been prepared better, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. Vietnamese subs are one of the few sandwiches that I enjoy fresh veggies on and the cilantro, daikon, carrot, and cucumber slices were all great.
Overall, Saigon Cafe is a cool new option for Brandon residents to have some Vietnamese food. The menu is somewhat limited, but you can get your pho and Bánh mì subs without driving to Tampa. My favorite Vietnamese place remains Saigon Deli on Waters Avenue at this point and time, but it looks like a new Vietnamese restaurant is poised to open soon on 301 so there may be yet another contender in the near future.
